Arthur Kohn - NNN 2024

Kosice, Czechoslovakia

"My father and mother had come to realize that the family can no longer stay together. Our only option to avoid what's happening.   The ghetto and the labor camp, and inevitably led to people being taken to gas chambers. And all this is about to begin...

I was told by my brother Shmuel that we have to leave tonight.  That's what we did. And I had like an hour or two hours’ notice…

And my mother said, 'we can't stay together. You have to forget about me. I'm not your mother. You can't think of me as your mother anymore. You will have a new mother, the lady of the house that we were staying in.  And I met her. She's going to be your mother.   Your name is no longer Shmuel...'"
