Kurt Gutfreund - NNN 2021

Vienna, Austria

Mr. Kurt Gutfreund, an only child born in Vienna, Austria in 1938, remembers arriving at Thereseinstadt with his mother on his fifth birthday. Instead of birthday cake and candles, Kurt and his mother were ordered to turn in all of their valuables. Mrs. Gutfreund was the wife of a goldsmith, yet her gold wedding band was not stamped to make it more affordable. The Nazis did not think it was real gold and allowed her to keep it. This was the first of many events that helped save mother and son, and taught Mrs. Gutfreund the survival skills she would need. Mrs. Gutfreund was very observant and had sharp insights into Nazi procedures. Be inspired by Mrs. Gutfreund’s acumen that helped her and and her son, Kurt, survive the terrors of Thereseinstadt together.
