Michael Weiss - NNN 2022

Kaszony, Carpathian Mountains

Born into a religious family in Kaszony in the Carpathian Mountains, Michael (Meir Leib) remembers the warmth and affection of family and community. Kaszony, home of the famous Kosziner Rebbe, had a small, very religious Jewish population where Shabbos was “magical.” When the Hungarian Nazis marched into town in 1938, no-body anticipated what was to come. Yet, taking only his Tefillin with him, Meir Leib and his family were moved to the Beregaszasz Ghetto, deported a few weeks later to Auschwitz, and then to Buchenwald, and lastly, to Zeitz. Meir Leib will never forget seeing the rabbi beaten by a German guard. Meir Leib kept his emunah, faith, during all of his suffering and loss, and concludes with the message: “You should never for-get what happened!”
